According to Simon Jenkins' article in today's Guardian — why exactly Messrs. Jenkins and Hastings have been retained to write opinion pieces for the Gruan, I don't quite know — the first half hour of broadcasting on Radio 4 was originally tailored by MI5 to fight communist influences on the working class.
