With the Proms over for another year and with some truly excellent concerts — the late-night solo Bach especially — scattered through a consistently solid season of performances, I find myself intrigued by Semyon Bychkov and the Vienna Phil's take on Franz Schmidt's second symphony.

I'm not yet sure whether I like it but it's a fascinating piece, with a lovely burbling motif in the woodwinds in the opening bars:



This isn't Bychkov, but it is the Vienna Phil under Erich Leinsdorf. There is an extract of Semyon Bychkov conducting the Schmidt at the Royal Academy of Music which, while incomplete, gives a good idea of the vast forces the pice requires:
