Voight interviewed
Sep. 26th, 2006 07:21 pmAfter losing 150lbs on the Covent Garden diet — she spent the pay-off from the Royal Opera, who sacked her on the grounds that she was too overweight, on a stomach stapling operation — Deborah Voigt is due to return to the UK in Ariadne auf Naxos next year. In honour of this, today's Guardian featured an interview in which Voigt mentioned the inherent sexism of the coverage of her appearance, saying:
"I once read a review pointing out how overweight I was," she says, "but they said that the tenor had shoulders like a linebacker. They did not also say that he had a stomach like a nine-months-pregnant woman."
What a great comment!
