Thunderstruck
Oct. 1st, 2006 09:52 amIt was a dark and stormy morning but, during what seemed to be a break in the rain, I foolishly decided to chance it and go running. At first, everything seemed to be going according to plan but then, just as I hit the riverside, the heavens opened and an almighty thunderstorm kicked off.
It was one of those classic Devonian thunderstorms — a bit like the one going on right now, actually — where, every time you tell yourself that it can't possibly get any worse, it somehow does. This is why, just when I'd persuaded myself that the rain couldn't get any heavier — the rain was so heavy the footpath by the river was turning into a stream of its own and my trainers were so full of water that they positively squelched — it suddenly started chucking down big hailstones. As a result of being unable to find any shelter, I now have an elegant line in mottled bruises down my arms which, if anyone asks, I plan to pass off as the results of some sort of macho martial art.
