News from Niwa

This has been doing the rounds for a while, but now it's official: Niwa are replacing their venerable T3E-1200E LC-544 with a pSeries. And, unsurprisingly, it's a big improvement:

Hazards forecasting models that took 80 minutes to complete on 40% of the previous supercomputer will now take eight minutes on about 4% of the new system...

And as if that wasn't enough, they're jumping from 1.2TB of storage to around 600TB. Wow. Talk about a serious jump...
