Dunedin dilemma
Apr. 7th, 2012 01:16 pmI'm trying to decide whether I can justify buying the Dunedin Consort one voice per part version of the St Matthew Passion, as recommended by Jeremy Summerly on R3 this morning, but given that I already have three versions — Gönnenwein (1968), Goodwin (1994), and Harnoncourt (2001) — it seems like it might be a bit of an indulgence (although, listing to a bootleg of the opening chorus on YouTube, it does sound pretty amazing).
Luckily the Dunedin's recording of Handel's Esther, due out at the start of next month, is a no-brainer: I don't have much in the way of Handel's vocal music, so it's its an obvious choice for next month:
ETA: after listening to the final section on this (Monday) morning's Essential Classics I think I've decided that the Dunedin St Matthew is a necessity rather than an indulgence...
