A day in Daresbury
Apr. 6th, 2016 10:30 pmVery busy day with an extremely early start — I was in around five after being unable to arrange a taxi for a more civilised hour — ahead of a meeting at Daresbury Laboratory. Then it was just a quick flight to Manchester, two trains to get to Warrington, another taxi journey, and we go to the lab around half-past nine.
The day was spent in a conference room, so we didn't get to see much of either the lab or Cheshire — the most striking feature of which seemed to be Fiddlers Ferry power station which dominated the view to the north west of Daresbury — other than the road to and from the station. The meetings were extremely interesting — I took over ten thousand words of notes — and our session went well.
After an afternoon of presentations and discussions, it was time to jump in a taxi and head home. On the way back, my knowledge of central Manchester — which turns out to be better than I thought, thanks to various conferences and intermittent overnight stays while waiting for flights to elsewhere — was tested when we had to navigate our way to Piccadilly and back to the airport
With a couple of hours to kill before our flight back and not much to do this side of the barrier, we went straight through to departures. As we were going through security, I overheard one of the staff hussling three people through to the gate, calling ahead on his radio that they were supposed to be on a flight to Alicante which was due to leave in seven minutes time. I hope they made it!
With time to kill, I spent a few hours working on my report &mdsah; travel time counts as work time, so I thought I might as well use it as productively as possible — before the short hop home. Everything went pretty smoothly and I got home a little after ten, after a little over 17 hours on the go...
