A gentle training run by the Exe
Jun. 2nd, 2016 09:49 pmExtremely enjoyable six and a half mile run down by the river. Despite my concerns about the sun — I coated myself in sunblock — and the heat, conditions were near-perfect with a wind that kept us from overheating.
After a delayed start caused by heavy traffic in town, we dropped the car in Water Lane and cut through back to the river. Just as we were turning into Maritime Court, we saw a cyclist go into the bonnet of a car turning right. I wasn't paying attention so I'm not sure whose fault it was, but everyone seemed OK. The driver — who, it turns out, I knew — was offering to report it to the police and to past on his insurrance details, but the cyclist didn't seem terribly interested once he was over his bout of swearing.
We set out along the river, stayed right when we hit the bridge and went along past the Double Locks to the main road. We crossed the swing bridge and followed the canal to the M5 flyover. Somewhere along the way, R got an insect in her eye and gamely asked me remove it with my finger — very Brief Encounter! Retracing our steps we, crossed back to the north side of Bridge Road and carried on up to Countess Wear Road, looping back along the mill leat, following the path alongside the university playing fields, and then back through Riverside Vally Park to the quayside.
We stopped for an essential top-up at Venezia and sat around enjoying our well earned orange & lemonades until it got too cold to sit outside in sweaty lycra.
