Opera in translation?

Is it wrong to listen to opera in translation? I ask because this morning's Building a Library feature on Die Walküre rated the excellent Goodall/ENO recording second only to Karajan's version on DG. While it's not particularly authentic to listen to Wagner in translation — I wouldn't want to be without an original version — the mere fact of being able to understand what is going on adds so much to the comprehensibility that I think it's probably justified.
