A thought struck me today: Windows is a simulation. With its myriad of APIs, layers of backward compatibility and endless patches, it is quite reasonable to say that Windows does not exist.

I always liked that hymn tune, 'michael' wasn't it, for his son that died?

That's right. According to Howells, the word setting turned up in the post one morning, he wrote the tune over breakfast and decided to name it after his son.

This week's Composer of the Week has been full of stuff like that. How Howells supposedly forgot about a proms commission and had to stay up till 2am on his honeymoon writing it (he didn't, but he rather liked the story, so he kept on retelling it); how, when he taught at the RCM, he was something of a babe magnet and everyone wanted to come to his soirées — the women because they all had a crush on him and the men because they knew the women would be there! That sort of thing. But more than anything else, he just comes across as having been a really nice person.
