Miscellaneous mid-week blues
Aug. 20th, 2008 09:45 pmFor one reason and another, I'm very out of sorts today. It's partly a case of mid-week blues and partly due to various legitimate sources of gloom.
Such as having to go through and strip off all the admin privileges from PRB's old user account, something which finally brought his retirement home to me. It was a sad and surprisingly complicated task — even though, Prospero-like, he'd already deleted all his stuff, drowning his books and breaking his staff — gradually stripping away the patinas of power, preparing his account for deletion. Melancholy stuff.
I've also started to come to terms with the fact that I really dislike political philosophy. My problem is that the approach of the vast majority of commentators seems deeply flawed. They all seem to assume that there is some deep, underlying Grand Unified Theory of Political Philosophy that explains everything, if only they could perfect it. But while this approach may sell books and give rise to endless philosophy courses — Professors Nozick and Rawls, yes, I thinking of you — it seems to assume a hedgehogian view of the world. Being by nature something of a fox, I find the majority of political some what tedious and annoying. So much so, that, had I not invested quite so much time and effort, I'd be sorely tempted to drop my studies and not bother with the last assignment.
Also, what's with today's prom? After an excellent selection of Anglo-French electronica yesterday, why put on something quite as nauseating as Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty? Talk about ending the day on the wrong note...
