Proms: Mahler 8
Jul. 16th, 2010 10:05 pmA solid opener to the season in the form of Mahler's 8th Symphony. The BBCSO and Jirà Belohlávek were on good form, striking a nice balance in the Veni Creator Spiritus between moments of overwhelming vastness and those of quiet reflection.
The soloists were an adept crowd although I felt slightly sorry for the tenor, who had apparently been required to deputise at short notice. The choral sound was solid and focused and came across well — a combination of good singing and sterling work by the BBC's producers.
Now I'm really looking forward to tomorrow's prom: Die Meistersinger in the aclaimed WNO production with Bryn Terfel as Hans Sachs.
