Why I don't like coriander
Aug. 23rd, 2010 09:49 pmVia the Guardian's Word of Mouth blog, I've uncovered the reason for my dislike of cilantro/coriander. According to Harold McGee, writing in the NYT:
The authoritative Oxford Companion to Food notes that the word "coriander" is said to derive from the Greek word for bedbug, that cilantro aroma "has been compared with the smell of bug-infested bedclothes" and that "Europeans often have difficulty in overcoming their initial aversion to this smell."
Maybe I'll try to teach myself to like it. Who knows. I've already been able to persuade myself that I like parsnips and I'm getting close to convincing myself of the merits of guacamole...
