David Briggs' Macdonald Variations
Mar. 13th, 2011 09:28 pmIn between obsessively watching Criminal Minds and reading Plato and Jo Walton and Nietzsche, I've been listening to David Briggs' Messe pour Notre-Dame which intercuts a setting of the mass with a series of Cochereau-like organ improvisations. Here's Briggs, recorded at Gloucester in 2001, improvising on the theme of Old Macdonald had a farm:
I've also noticed that YouTube also seems to have a rip of Briggs' beautiful setting of O Lord, support us from the same Hyperion CD as the mass, but sadly not my current favourite: a short and dazzling toccata on the Te Deum plainchant.
