CM5: Public Enemy
Mar. 16th, 2011 09:25 pmHappy family arrive late for mass. A sinister guy sneaks in behind them and murders the father. The priest freaks. It turns out that it's one of a series of random public murders in Providence and the BAU are on their way to Rhode Island. Rossi with a Fitzgerald quote for the open. Prentiss is in goth mode. Rossi is Catholic. JJ is unusually negative about the journos. The actress playing the widow does a really good job of combining total devastation with determination; so pale and washed out Rossi reassures the priest. The kid comes through with a key detail. Nice intercut sequence of the widow's descriptions with Rossi's reenactment in the church. JJ wants to stay with Meg. Em answers her own question: guns are for killing but knifes are for terror.
"Indulge me..." Rossi has a theory about the targets. USUB == arsonist. Nice misdirect at the market. JJ isn't happy about coopting Meg Collins, but she still tries to sell the idea: "You represent Paul's memory." "I represent Sophia! Paul's given enough. So have I." Hotch and Rossi crack the case: the UNSUB is feeding of the grief of the police department. Garcia returns and traces the UNSUB in ten seconds flat. Oedipus complex much? Hotch overdoes it for the press and Meg comes through with the press statement. Yet another victim with character and autonomy and greatness of spirit. "What are you smiling at? You're going to jail." Which is exactly why he's smiling.
Hotch: "There are lots of ways that sons defeat their fathers" Reid: "I just keep getting PhDs!" Morgan realises the UNSUB will probably get sent to the same prison as his father, which explains why he was smiling when CoTW arrested him. Final montage of life getting back to normal in Providence, Sophia getting a card from the BAU team on her first communion, with a big fat cheque from David Rossi tucked inside, and Billy O getting his comeuppance. Shakespeare quote for the close, although I failed to find it in a quick skim through the plays so it may be apocryphal...
