Can you tell what it is yet?
Mar. 3rd, 2013 09:21 pmMy parents have been watching Howard Goodall's Story of Music. They thought it was rather good, even though pater was a bit suspicious of Goodall's apparent wholesale dismissal of everything after 1918. Mater, however, was more interested in my take on the theme music:
| Mater: | I want you to watch it because I want to know if you recognise the music. It starts every episode except the last one. It's a piece for string orchestra and then it turns into an awful pop song |
| Me: | I can't promise I'll be able to recognise it. And it might not be a real piece of music at all. It might just be a pastiche... |
| Mater: | Go on. Try. Even if you don't know what it is, I bet you'll be able to find out... |
| Me: | [ resigned to doing my filial duty ] OK, I'll give it a go... |
Luckily, the challenge wasn't nearly as hard as I'd feared and it didn't take long for me to realise the trick. The theme isn't actually two pieces, just one: Lady Gaga's Poker Face, first in an arrangement and then in the original. So it turns out that the piece that Mater likes is exactly the same as the one she doesn't!
