As promised, photos from the open finals of Saturday's flash bouldering competition at the Quay.

Rhos on the first problem

Rhos made the first problem look easy...

Rhos knocking off the second problem

...while second was very much a formality...

Rhos on the penultimate problem

...and it wasn't until this beast of a problem that things started to get tricky.

No-one else stuck this...

It was so tough that I don't think anyone managed the next move — up to the orange hemisphere where friction was somehow supposed to get you up to the next move.

The fiendishly difficult third problem

From the side it is clear just how far the black volumes extended and just how tiny the purple crimps really were.

Finishing the last problem

The last problem, with its familiar finish on the orange volumes.

Brushing and briefing

A combination of brushing and briefing in the middle of the finals, with Chris Cubitt warming up for his first problem, Rueben preparing for his second, and Rhos Frugtneit being briefed on her penultimate problem.

Ben on the first problem

Ben demostrates his amazing sense of balance on the first problem. In case it's not obvious, there aren't any handholds until they reach the fluro orange crescent at the top of the picture...

Ben finishing the second problem

A nice shot of Ben readying himself for the last couple of moves of the second problem.

Tom on the middle problem

Ellis on the middle problem

...Ellis just before his final move...

...and Chris celebrating his send.

The men's final problem, although similar to the women's featured an extra couple of moves with the finish now situated on a triangular orange volume above the two ovals. With the competition at stake, Ellis and Tom both needed to send the problem. Ellis went first:

Ellis prepares his last move

One hand on each volume...

...then heel onto the volume and a very careful move up to the final hold.

Tom prepares his last move

After a dynamic start to the problem, Tom took the last few moves very carefully...

...before getting two fingers on the volume to position himself ready for the final move.

It was a great afternoon of climbing, with a finish that went right down to the wire and required a huddle of judges to determine. Many awesome photos were taken, a fun time was had, and there were chips (with fish for the carnivores) on the way home — a quite superb way to spend one's Saturday...
