Routes for the first time in ages
Sep. 16th, 2015 09:36 pmA nice evening of route climbing with M. Despite concerns about my stamina and general fitness, I wasn't on bad form. I easily on-sighting a handful of 6b+s with only a couple of moments of scrappy footwork, both of which were down to sloppy route reading — I'd barely considered the first few moves and instead focused on the overhangs, only to discover some tricky bits at at the start whereas the overhang moves were a total breeze.
M had a good time, climbing a bunch of things up to 5+ until she got pumped — she hadn't climbed since early July, so her stamina wasn't exactly at its best. But now that's she's got a job that doesn't absorb every single second of her time — a novel experience, apparently! — she's planning on climbing more, so it looks like I might finally be getting back to top roping after the recent prolonged period of bouldering and auto-belay work.
(While I was waiting around and warming up, I noticed a couple of people kitting or, rather, trying to, given they were doing it incorrectly. My natural reticence briefly warred with the need to ensure that they were safe before I went over to check they were OK, reasoning that I'd want someone to do the same to me if they saw me doing something sub-optimal and that I'd never forgive myself if I did nothing, purely out of shyness, and they had an accident.
Anyway, I wandered over and very diffidently offered a suggestion to the person who was struggling to get themselves ready: "Um, excuse me, you do know you're trying to put your harness on backwards don't you...")
