Cray User Group: Day Five
May. 13th, 2016 06:30 pmHaving stayed overnight to avoid travelling back late, I got up and went for a wander along the river before packing.

With everything organised, I condensed my notes into an outline of my trip report before checking out of the hotel. Took a rather roundabout route which eventually took me to Paddington and the train back to Devon.
The train was packed and I was extremely glad I'd booked a seat. At Reading, a small group got on and, having failed to book, cast around in search of available seating. I pointed out that the seat next to me had been booked from Paddington to Penzance but no-one had arrived so they were probably safe to use it.
Once ensconced in three empty seats close to where I was sitting, they fished out a bottle of champagne and promptly offered me a glass. As the journey went on, they offered me nuts and sweets and various other little bits of food. The woman next to me managed to spill some of her water on me when the train breaked suddenly — I was amused more than anything, and rather grateful it hadn't been champagne — and they were impressed by my sangfroid.
But it's not all that surprising that I was laid back about it: they made what might have been a tedious journey rather more entertaining. Partway through, noticing I was doing the crossword, the person next to me said, "Oh, you're doing the crossword, I can't do those at all..." at which I looked at my grid with only a third of the clues filled in and said, "On this evidence, neither can I..."
