How much the creepy?
Mar. 5th, 2006 10:28 pmBeen reading some of M.R. James' short stories today. Yeah, I know I should have been reading John Stuart Mill or at least Dostoyevsky, but what can I say? I'm weak.
Anyway, I'd forgotten how damned creepy some of them are. My current favourite — or maybe that should be my current least favourite — is the supremely chilling Lost Hearts, with its sinister colours of child abuse. It's what The Turn of the Screw, the Henry James version, natch, since the Britten version is supremely scary, should have been. Maybe I'm being unfair. Maybe it's time to reread Turn of the Screw...
