After celebrating one the nephews' birthdays in the afternoon, we went out for an evening of culture with JF, although, thoroughly out of sorts, I wasn't in the mood to enjoy it much. We left early enough to get supper before the start of the concert. I had a salad — a wise choice in hindsight — while a couple of the others went for a turkey thing wrapped in pastry. Sadly the first iteration of the turkey was cool rather than hot and had to be sent back. The second iteration was hot but by that point we were somewhat pressed for time, so Pater and I went ahead to take our seats in the auditorium.

The concert opened with Haydn's quartet op.20 No.5 which was inoffensive but didn't really interest me much. The second piece was Schnittke's quartet No. 3, which I liked rather more. The concert finished with Beethoven's quartet No. 13 with the Grosse Fugue as the final movement. Summing up her evening, J said, "I liked the Beethoven and the salted caramel ice cream best!"

The Coull Quartet, artists in residence at Warwick for the last 40 years, gave fine performances of everything. I particularly liked the way Philip Gallaway introduced each of the pieces, with his discussion of the Schnittke coming complete with examples of the themes and a discussion of the polystylistic techniques used to tie them together.
