Climbing with A for the first time since I got back, I almost managed to miss her at the climbing centre. I arrived early. Walking across the plaza, I saw Iz talking on the phone. She waved and gave me a vague indication she might be up in five minutes. I went upstairs, settled down in the workshop cafe with the crossword and waited for either A or Iz to appear.

Half an hour after the time we'd agreed to meet, Chef Paul spotted me and said, "What are you doing? Herself has been downstairs for ages and she's spitting tacks..." Fortunately for me, he was right about the first part and shamelessly exagerating the second! When we compared notes, I realised that A had been on the phone, on hold for something, when she arrived, so I hadn't recognised her voice. Paul had signed her in and had been busy — either on the phone or, possibly, eating a cake! — so he hadn't said anything either, while I was obviously engrossed in Monday's crossword and had missed the whole thing.

As I was getting ready, J appeared in the doorway to tell A that she'd managed to lose her husband, her mother-in-law, and two dogs. We hadn't seen them and she went off to search for them. She must've been successful because, a little while later, we spotted her and A's grandmother standing by the stairs, watching us as we climbed some of the slab routes.

To my lack of surprise, Izzy's phone call must've overrun, because she never appeared! At least some things never change!
