Philosophical roundup
May. 6th, 2006 05:31 pmToday's Gruanaid features an article by Jonathan Glover, sketching out some of the main issues surrounding reproductive ethics. He covers the usual areas: where should limits on fertility treatment fall; how to balance attitudes to pre-natal disability with respect for the self-esteem of people living with disabilities; designer babies as an attempt to provide children with a good start in life; and medical versus non-medical limits on technology. Worth reading, even if only as a refresher — it persuaded me to dust off Writings on an Ethical Life and read up on a few points in more detail.
In other philosophical news, the LRB has a review of some of the last sets of essays written by Bernard Williams prior to his death. Makes me wish I had more time and, possibly, access to a better library.
