Cultural bricolage

sawylYesterday's Guardian contains a short note on Ken MacLeod's Learning the World, now out in paperback. I also liked the review of Vulcan 607, which tells the story behind a long distance bombing raid carried out by one of the last in service vulcan during the Falklands. While I'm unlikely to buy the book, military history isn't really my thing, it sounds like classic geeky stuff: all slide rules, fuel calculations, and vital components being scavenged from museums.
On the musical front, I caught an excerpt from Aulis Sallinen's The King Goes Forth to France on yesterday's CD Review and it's left me wanting more. Maybe I'll see if I can track down a copy. I also reckon that the new recording of Finzi's Intimations of Immortality, which I picked up on the basis of a positive review, is well worth the princely sum of six quid.
