Automake and subdirs

Today's interesting discovery? That automake doesn't allow SUBDIRS definitions to traverse more than one level in a directory hierarchy at a time. This means that each sub-directory must contain its own Makefile.am, even it only contains a SUBDIRS directive pointing to the next sub-directory in the tree.

This may or may not be a good thing, but it's certainly interesting.
