A day of cooking and exercise, with the latter designed to counter the effects of the former.

Rather unwisely, we opted to take a constitutional wander along the banks of the Oxford Canal, which we found to be staggeringly boggy — not all that surprising given the recent heavy rain and the proximity of a large waterway — and rather tranquil. The food, hummus and spanakopita, made using lazy puff pastry rather than phyllo, was rather more fun.

Now safely stuffed, the entire household is tenterhooks waiting to see if V — one of pater's Russian friends — will to show up today. There shouldn't be any uncertainty about this given that we know he was due to fly into the UK today, but V being V, he may attempt to sleep on an airport bench, at a train station, or under the stairs at the university — all things for which he has prior form, as the police probably wouldn't say.

I think I ate some spanakopita at Athens airport a couple of weeks ago, though it was only labelled in English (as "spinach pastry") as far as I recall.

It sounds like spanakopita but it might possibly have been spanakopitakia: basically the same thing, but bundled up into triangular parcels and deep fried. Both are good.

Did you have to dress up as a character from Sailor Moon?
