Literary recommendations
Jun. 9th, 2005 09:06 pmAfter resuming our discussion about Houellebecq, the Good Doctor recommended Whatever (actually, he recommended Extension Du Domaine but I'm going to go with the anglo version). He told me the plot was about a software engineer having a nervous breakdown in a town in central France and when he mentioned this, he looked me significantly. I'm not sure why. Maybe he thinks I'll identify with the main character. Which I probably will. Maybe he thinks I'm having an existential breakdown. I probably am.
I in turn recommended The Restraint of Beasts by Magnus Mills, which I read a few years back. It features a team of three hopeless fence builders living in a grim caravan going more broke every week, working for an extremely sinister slaughter house. Although I can't really remember the details, I remember it being very, very funny in a dark way. Maybe I'll re-read it once I get done with my current book.
