On both last week's and this week's Private Passions, the guests have chosen Schlummert ein — Diana Quick opting for Fischer-Dieskau, Alex Jennings plumping for Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson. While I agree that it's a nice aria — the whole of Cantata 82 is rather wonderful and perfectly suited to a rainy Sunday afternoon — I personally prefer the opening aria, Ich habe genug, which features a really great oboe obbligato.

In another coincidence, both guests also picked something by Marvin Gaye. Maybe it's an actorly thing?

You had to see Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson sing Ich habe genug (sic) to appreciate how well it can be done.

Shattering. Sellars excelled himself there. So sad that it does not seem to exist in a video version.

Yes, I'm really sorry I missed it.

I remember catching a TV relay of the Sellars production of Theordora from Glyndebourne, the one that featured Hunt-Lieberson as Irene and Dawn Upshaw as Theodora, and being very impressed by it. Maybe the time has come to pick a DVD of it...
