Strange disklabel problem
May. 5th, 2007 10:11 pmIn trying to tidy up the last few items from last week's OS upgrade, I've come across an annoying incompatibility between the disklabel formats of the two versions. This means that whilst I can still see 8 slices under the old OS, I can only see one — the root slice — under the new.
As I see it, there are three main options: reapply the old disc labels with the new OS and pray that the data remains in tact; backup the files using the old OS, wipe the disc and restore from backup; bite the bullet, wipe the disc and forget about the current contents. Unfortunately, all is not quite as simple as it seems — due to a bootloader problem, the old OS will only boot into rescue mode, making the process of creating backup somewhat painful.
The sooner I get some proper NAS storage, the better.
