The Sound of Drums
Jun. 23rd, 2007 10:58 pmWow. Doctor Who certainly lived up to the expectations raised by last week's episode.
The Master, played superbly by John Simm, was a perfect counter balance to the Doctor. He had the Doctor's habit of switching from the serious to the absurd and enough charisma to make you forgive him for it. They were similar enough to make the Dr's comment about their starting out as friends plausible and different enough to give their initial phone conversation real bite — that whole sequence was the pure televisual superglue. There were other nice touches, like the way that the Master referred to his wife as his companion. What a great way to indicate the Master's way of doing things: instead of putting up with all that unrequited pining, the Master and his Missus head down the aisle.
I also liked all the nods to the past. The Time Lords' costumes from the original series. The Master's preference for jelly babies. The way the carrier Valiant looked very like Cloudbase (although I suppose it's just possible it might have been an homage to SHIELD's Helicarrier — it might even have been both, a double homage, guaranteed to work on both sides of the Atlantic).
Let's hope next week's ep is of a similarly high standard.
