The Stolen Earth
Jun. 28th, 2008 08:55 pmI wasn't entirely convinced by The Stolen Earth. It was so clunky in places — I mean, getting every telephone exchange to call the same number at the same time? — you could practically smell the machine oil. It was also far too busy, as though RTD had read one to many Marvel crossovers — y'know, the ones which constantly refer to events from other series so that, unless you've read every comic since the days of King Kirby, the story's almost opaque — and decided to follow their lead by jamming as much confusing information into the episode as possible.
But not all was negative. The daleks were good value, as ever. Davros' return was worth waiting for, although not entirely unexpected given his Bond-like ability to escape certain death. I even liked some of the fun moments, like Bernard Cribbins' attempts to blind a dalek with a paintball gun, and thought Richard Dawkins heliocentrism-bashing cameo was absolutely delightful.
Also, it may just be me and my SF stuffed brain, but did the planets trapped in the Medusa Cascade remind anyone else of the Kiint homeworld in Peter F. Hamilton's Night's Dawn Trilogy? And it seemed that there might just have been a nod to Banks in the Doctor's comment that the theft of the Earth would have required, "fearsome technology", since it was for teleporting planets that IMB's eponymous Feersum Enjinn was built...
