First Night of the 2009 Proms
Jul. 17th, 2009 10:50 pmI have to admit I skipped the section purely because it contained Tchaikovsky's third piano concerto, but the rest of the concert was far more to my taste. While I liked the rest of the programme very much, I was particularly struck by the sheer wonderfulness of ending the concert with Bruckner's setting of Psalm 150.
The whole idea of finishing the opening concert in the series with a psalm all about praising God with the trumpet, the strings and the voice just seems so appropriate. And Bruckner's music was just amazing — from those great opening alleluias, via a beautiful quiet section with soprano and violin solo, to the fugue and closing alleluias it was perfect — t was like the Te Deum distilled down to ten minutes.
