Vaughan Williams' Antiphon
Sep. 6th, 2009 02:09 pmFor some reason, I've got Vaughan Williams' Antiphon from the set of Five Mystic Songs running round in my head. I'm not sure why. I think something has triggered a memory from my school days. Anyway here, for a Sunday afternoon, is a nice version from St Paul's Cathedral.
On Tuesday's Breakfast Rob Cowan asked, vis-à-vis Bernstein's Mass, whether religious messages required a religious sound — something conspicuously absent from the Bernstein. One person emailed in to say, rather appallingly, that they preferred the modern mode of Christian worship and music, hated Bach with a passion and thought Christmas carol concerts were basically pub singalongs. My attitude is the complete reverse; I have very little time for the religion, but I find the music endlessly wonderful...
