Sweet Sixtieth
Apr. 23rd, 2005 09:53 pmSo, my mum's sixtieth party was really pretty cool.
The food was great: my dad made some really good hummus, there were some really good things with Bulgar wheat and lentils, and the homemade mayonnaise was good (although there's still time for a near-fatal attack of salmonella to kick in). A friend of my ma's helped out with some totally excellent spinakopetas, some baked peppers thing and a really great chocolate roulade. The birthday cake was also totally fabulous - my uncle had picked up one up from the place in London that he used when we celebrated my Gran's 90th a couple of years back - some of the kids couldn't get enough of it and at least one of the twins had three slices and kept trying to persuade people to get her another...
There was a nice moment when my mum gave a little speech when she was cutting the cake. She said, "My only regret is that my mum isn't here to see this, she'd have loved it", and then my dad then said, "And I think we're all glad that my mum isn't here!" All the family members and friends who knew my dad's parents killed themselves laughing while everybody else sort of laughed uneasily. Classic.
It was also nice to see people I hadn't seen in ages, get cornered by them and realise why I'd spent the last ten years avoiding them. I'm also glad I traveled yesterday rather than today - some of the London contingent were delayed because the line between Rugby and Birmingham had been reduced to a bus only service by engineering work. That didn't stop one of my relatives turning up with my second cousin Caitlin, who hadn't been due to come but her parents were so washed out after the birth of their second child yesterday that they need to get rid of her for a while.
All in all, a good time was had by everyone.
