Expecting the unexpected
Sep. 29th, 2010 07:19 pmHigh performance computing is an interesting field; a strange mixture of serious computer science, high level politicking, and heavy engineering that sometimes make it feel like computing must have felt in the 1970s, when all computers were vast and expensive and water cooled. Thus, it's not unusual for a conversation to run the gamut, starting out with firmware levels and ending with a discussion about flow rates, valve settings and actuator faults — with the latter sometimes caused by the problems with the installation of the former.
I think that's why I like my chosen field: it embraces so many elements that, no matter how hard you try to plan everything out, something always seems to catch you. And it's this challenge, this need to deal with the sudden and unanticipated problem, that keeps me interested.
