Breakfast was a lazy drawn out affair, with much gossiping and babysitting and listing to R3. When we finally got our acts together at around midday, we drove out to Hatton to walk the locks of the Grand Union and to grab sandwiches at a canal-side cafe. The weather wasn't great — cold and grey with low cloud and hints of fog — but despite that, when we stopped for lunch, pater insisted on sitting outside. It took just over 15 minutes for his moral authority to decay sufficiently for the rest of us to stage a rebellion and head inside, where we wolfed down soups and panini and hot chocolates until we started to defrost.

The rest of the afternoon was lost to a combination of siestas and reading, ahead of an evening out at the local Italian restaurant. The meal was rather a success, which I credit to the moderating influences of a couple of non-core family and a rather impressive scene at another table — a rather tired individual came in and rather loudly helped them celebrate a birthday — which convinced me that my lot have some way to go in the embarrassment stakes. Other highlights included pater selecting the wrong dessert — my sister had arranged for him to get a birthday candle in his chocolate bombe, only for him to change his mind at the last minute — and a moment when a somewhat under-dressed woman strode past on her way back from the lavatory as though she was God's gift, only for G & I to kill ourselves laughing.
