Found out, rather late in the day, that I'd apparently been left in charge of the kingdom. My colleague's response, when they learned of this from an out-of-office message, was priceless. I've never known anyone look quite so upset and disconcerted.

Goodness only knows what they thought I'd do: issue orders to bootstrap a singularity, initiate a trillion dollar Mars mission, or implement a crash program to breed a better winged monkey or something...
