A birthday lunch at the Red Lion
Feb. 16th, 2012 09:01 pmPleasant lunchtime outing to The Red Lion in Broadclyst to mark Martyn's birthday — a secret apparently revealed by the laxities of certain social networking APIs — and, possibly, to celebrate handover.
Over lunch we managed to stay of most of the usual contentious topics — 9/11 conspiracies, chemtrails, climate change — but on the way back we touched on the subject of what someone referred to as "the asbestos scare". I noted that the terminology was incorrect, given asbestos' obvious toxicity, and immediately thought of Cave Johnson's line in Portal 2: "the median latency of asbestos poisoning is 44.6 years, so if you're under thirty, you're laughing"
(Whilst skimming the wikipedia asbestos page, I notice a comment about Artex right next to a photograph that looks worryingly like my ceiling. So it's probably a good thing I'm not a huge canasta fan!)
