An intriguing passion setting

Via the listener slot on this morning's R3 breakfast, a rather interesting version of the St Matthew Passion by Russian bishop Hilarion Alfeyev.

Perhaps it's unfair to say so, but it feels a bit like an unsuccessful attempt to re-imagine Bach's great opening chorus Herr, unser Herrscher at the start of the St John Passion. Still, it's an intriguing idea even if it doesn't quite come off...
