Of plans and uncooperative machines

Now I remember why I rarely plan anything in advance. I had complex arrangements for today: if I got this done by such a time, I'd be able to do that and still have time to meet up and do something else. Pretty basic stuff. So I was less than overjoyed to get a call from work. In the end I lost a huge chunk of my day to fixing a slow, unpleasantly knotty problem, and had to scratch the social event of the season in order to make my other commitments.
The whole thing was somewhat frustrating and the difficulty was compounded by a problem with my laptop midway through: the trackpad stopped responding, the start menu stopped working, and the only way I was able to switch between windows was by alt-tabbing. When I eventually reached a point where I could reboot without interrupting the stuff I was doing remotely, the stupid thing booted back up with a corrupted local copy of my profile. I was eventually able to recover my normal profile by dropping the VPN, logging out, reconnecting and logging back in again, but it was still something I could have done without.
And the icing on the cake? The crash caused OWA to corrupt all my filter rules. Yet again...
