Progress update: a serious test run
Jul. 28th, 2013 07:56 pmFollowing a throwaway comment from one of my fellow climbers a few weeks ago, I've been mulling over the prospect of doing the local half-marathon. When the idea was first mooted, I somewhat non-commital. But having had time to parse the subtext — "I'm thinking of doing the half-marathon, would you like to do it too?" — I'm starting to come round to the idea.
Despite being reasonably confident I could still go the distance, I decided to prove the point by stretching my usual weekend runs out to 12 and 15 miles respectively. Without any preparation and on top of my usual regime of pre-work running, I was able to complete both easily and at a good pace. Although it's not terribly representative of the real thing — both my training routes were along the flat of the river whereas the proper route is quite hilly — it was enough to make me think that I probably wouldn't embarrass myself if I signed up to do a proper race at some point.
