Kayaking on the Exe

sawylA quick swim first thing before meeting H in town. We went down to the river, arranged to hire a couple of kayaks in the afternoon and went for a walk down towards the old Countess Weir paper mill to kill a bit of time. We got back in time to wolf down a couple of Chef Paul's flapjacks — essential fuel for the afternoon's activities. As we were leaving I bumped into E, who'd just arrived to work on the new bouldering problems — in an impressive display of restraint, she'd shown up half an hour after the opening time.
The kayaking was a great success. I was a bit out of practice to start with, the technique soon came back to me and we powered our way down practically to the M5 before turning round and coming back. We both managed to avoid going in the water — better than stag party we saw returning just as we were leaving! — and beyond a couple of blisters, I seem to have survived pretty much unscathed.
After a late lunch, we headed back to my place to skim through various photos and vids — the things I miss being an fb refusenik! — and for me to finally change out of my soggy canoeing clothes. We had a pizza supper, enlivened by one of the waitresses dropping a tray of glasses whilst going upstairs, and adjourned to Georges where H decided to try the green Alien beer — I suspect it was Honeystreet Ales Alien Abduction) — before catching the train back to Honiton.
