A few weeks back, I bit the bullet and downloaded RealPlayer for OS X so that I'd be able to listen to stuff from the BBC — mainly Late Junction, which is usually on way too late for me. I installed the app and everything worked pretty much as expected, except that the package had the obnoxious temerity to install itself on the desktop. Here's how I fixed it:
  1. moved RealPlayer.app to the /Applications directory
  2. went into ~/Library/Preferences
  3. opened com.RealNetworks.RealPlayer.plist with the Property List Editor
  4. found the property RealPlayer\MainApp
  5. changed it to point to /Applications/RealPlayer.app
  6. started Safari

Once I'd done all that, I was able to listen to stuff from the Beeb through Safari without having the constant visual annoyance of an application installed on my desktop. I was surprised at how easy, straight forward, user friendly and well documented the whole procedure was. Not.
