Cancellations, diversions, and delays
Oct. 19th, 2014 07:29 pmArriving at Coventry Station in good time for my train, the immediate signs weren't good: a very empty car park, a busy concourse, and a departures board where everything was flagged up as cancelled. (I subsequently discovered this was down to late running engineering works) With no other way to get my connection, I prevailed on mater to drive me to New Street. Despite roadworks on the A45, we got to central Birmingham with about 15 minutes to spare, only to get caught up in more traffic. Cutting my losses, I jumped out and ran the mile or so to the station — running for trains seems to have become a recurring theme in my life! — where I managed to catch my scheduled train with a couple of minutes to spare.
As soon as we were underway, the train manager read out a list of stops that included both Gloucester and Patchway — never a good sign — before announcing a final arrival time at least an hour and a half later than I'd expected. Sure enough we took the scenic route through South Wales and the Severn Tunnel to Bristol, where the train paused for 40 minutes before resuming its journey. Fantastic...
