I'd always planned to leave on the dot today, so I struggled in well before dawn to get things started. And it was just as well I did: R asked me if we could meet up slightly earlier than planned; then my colleague told me that a train had hit Polsloe Bridge on the way into town and that the other main road was closed because a lorry full of wood had become stuck under it. Rather than chance it, I left early and got in town quarter of an hour earlier than I needed to.

We had a nice end to the afternoon, splitting out time between lead and top rope. After warming up, R sent a 6a she was projecting — although this was only her third attempt — with some quality knee drops and a nice recovery a couple of moves from the finish, when she realised she needed to rearrange her feet. It was certainly better than my first attempt: having flashed it last time, I screwed up today's first go with some very scrappy footwork close to the bottom. We then shifted over to a bunch of mid-range lead routes and both zipped up them with no trouble, pausing only to hold the dead end of the rope for someone who was working to train up a new lead belayer.

Partway through the session, R complained to P about the music. He offered her the world — or at least the 20 odd million songs known to Spotify — and she selected 90s hits. I'm not quite sure what category he set but we then had to endure the macarana — the cause of some impressively disgusted expressions down on the floor — Gangsta's Paradise, Sex on the Beach, Barbie Girl, and so, so much more. K in the office had tried to talk P out of it — but he said he was merely acting on a customer request — but no luck. In the end she was so offended by Barbie Girl that, as we were pick up our keys, she asked us never, ever to pick the music again.

All I can say is bad though things may have been, they could have been substantially worse: I might have picked the music...
