Lin's 70th Birthday
Apr. 25th, 2015 10:02 pmThe day of the party began with a gentle breakfast followed by the arrival of a few early arrivals — principally my sister and my uncle — bearing various additional bits of food and a handful of presents. With everything ready and mater eventually happy with her ensemble — the same one she wore for my sister's wedding, almost exactly a year ago — we had a brief moment of piece before the first real guests arrived.

Lin pointing to a nice new photo of the grandchildren from my sister.

The table in the dining room, groaning with food including a couple of baked salmon, kipper paté, various different types of hummus and mayonnaise and a big bowl of potato salad, all of it home-made.

The reds set out on table ready for the guests. Not shown: a similar number of bottles of white and an equally large number of bottles of fizz. Astonishingly, we somehow ended up with wine left over...

Various partygoers in the kitchen. From left to right: Hilary, Anna, Robert, Mick, Ana and Lydia, and Jill, with Martin, Pete and Simon in the dining room.

Hilary, Stel and Martin in the hall.

Celia, Simon, Julia and Lyall catching up in the kitchen.

BD and Sue have a moment. Sue is probably trying to remind BD, who is almost 93 and whose memory isn't as good as it used to be, who she is.

Gill and Celia in conversation.

BD and Julia.

The cake — a tasty number from Konditor and Cook...

Charlie helps his grandmother blow out the candles on her cake.

Charlie enjoys the spectacle of the freshly extinguished candles. (On the right, just visible, is the pan containing my sister's spectacularly good vegetarian lasagne)

Lin and Stel watching something in the kitchen with Nilly looking over Lin's shoulder. No idea what they were watching...

Lin makes a birthday speech while Ana catches the moment for posterity.
The guests, many of whom had come travelled quite some way to be here, started to potter off by late afternoon, leaving us, John, Sue and Dave, Lyall and Celia, to a gentle evening during which Lin opened some of her prsents.

I'm not sure what Bobby has just done, but it's obviously pretty funny!

Andrew and Charlie are always photogenic — I'm sure I've got a couple of different versions of this portrait knocking around.
Following the departure of my sister and her family, the rest of us had a buffet supper using the left-overs from lunch, and after the departure of Sue and Dave, we knocked off having had a thoroughly enjoyable day.
