Completing the sequence of Herbert Howells' Three Carol Anthems with A Spotless Rose. The piece, whose text is also based on Isaiah 11, sharing common features with Es ist ein Ros entsprungen, features a particularly lovely baritone solo in the second verse.


The performance here are the choir of New College.

Another of Herbert Howell's Three Carol Anthems, this time Here is the Little Door performed by Chanticleer. The tempo is a good deal slower than almost everyone else, but the line is sustained and I think it works.

In keeping with the current mini-theme of unaccompanied choral pieces, here's Herbert Howells' exquisit Sing Lullaby from his set of Three Carol Anthems.

Yesterdays edition of Record Review on R3 featured a stunning new version of Herbert Howells' Jubilate Deo from Collegium Regale. Recorded by Trinity College Choir in Coventry Cathedral, the recording does an amazing job of capturing the big acoustic. I'm definitely adding it to my list of things to pick up.

Here's a performance of the piece from Ohio which, although somewhat distant, gives a good impression of the piece.


There's also a King's College version which comes coupled with the Te Deum...
