I think I promised to write a little something about last night, complete with details of indiscretions, moral lapses, faux pas, and generally blackmailable material, but since any and all such events involved Yours Truly, I'm going to gloss over them and dwell indulgently on the acts, missteps and follies of others instead.

Suprisingly good time had by all. More indiscretions to follow later...

Having decided to go the Wednesday thing with various members of the Great and the Good, I've suddenly started to have attacks of nervous paranoia.

I'm kinda worried that maybe I've been invited by mistake. Maybe it'll be like the Princeton conference I went to a few years back where, because I was the youngest participant by about twenty years and stood out like a sore thumb, people kept on asking to see my conference badge and giving me looks that said, "Yeah, we know you're really just a grad student on the mooch, whatever your badge may say, but we're turning a blind eye just this once."

Or maybe it's not a mistake. Maybe it's yet another sign that the Masters after God is indeed playing a long game for, while I've been lulling after the embarrassing events of May, he's been biding his time and working behind the scenes to do horrible things to my career slope. Maybe he's worked out my secret weakness: corporate hospitality leads to fear, fear leads to anger, anger lead hatred, hatred leads to anger, anger leads to hospitality and hospitality leads to the Dark Side.

I'm also kinda worried that if I fail to wear a shirt and tie, I'll end up contravening some subtle rule of corporate dress etiquette. Trouble is, if I attempt to look smart I'll inevitably fail and, in the process, burn any hacker kudos I've managed to acquire over the years. I think that on balance I'll probably stick with my usual dress code — that way any departures from accepted behaviour on my part can be shrugged off with the old line about geeks and their legendary lack of people skills — although out of deference to the seniority of my colleagues, I think that this time I'll ixnay on the scruffy black nail polish, just in case.

Meal, or at least the veggie option, was pretty good despite the noticeably poor showing from the Menagerie. The evening started off in Kino, moved on to the Cat in the Hat for victuals and then back to Kino for a sundowner. Over dinner we discussed the UK transportation system, the current French fashion for burning cars, the precise number of takes required to record Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, modern French classical music from Olivier Messiaen to Kaija Saariaho and various other matters. A fine evening was had by all, especially those, such as Yours Truly, who had already arranged to take Friday off.

Off out for a Thanksgiving meal. Hopefully, it's not going to be too awful...

Spent a pleasant evening discussing Cartesianism, prog rock and religion with [livejournal.com profile] doctor_squale and [livejournal.com profile] vincel. My esteemed friends eventually concluded that I should spent less time in the library reading cheap philosophy and more time partying and indulging in shameless hedonism. A most fair assessment and one that definitely calls for further research...

Well, it looks like YT is going to escape into town for lunch. Wohoo! It seems as though I'm going to dodge the threat of mushroom whatnots at the works canteen after all.

I seem to get invited to all the best social events.

I've just been invited to a party to celebrate the acceptance of the new sand. Apparently, one of the project managers is working full time on a seating plan. Given the massive egos and ancient grudges involved, I think he might need his very own supercomputer and a simulated annealing algorithm to ensure that he comes up with the best possible arrangement.
