It's been a long road, but we're finally at the end: the last episode of season 4 of Shadow Unit. It's a painful conclusion after all the years of living with the characters but it's true to the spirit of the enterprise and very much sticks the dismount, successfully resolving the story and character arcs in a way that doesn't feel forced.

It's been six years and one hundred days, but with Asylum we finally know the identity of the thing that eats T. rexes. Before I knew I thought it could have been anyone, although I suspected some more than others. Now that I know, I can't see how I could ever have thought it could have been anyone else...

Should I be worried that I've started identifying with Esther Falkner?

Falkner pushed the end button and frowned at her phone for at least three seconds, until Todd's name and phone number and the call duration blinked to black. She rubbed her temples and tried to guess at the source of her headache for purposes of successful treatment--exhaustion? Glare? Ponytail? Lack of caffeine? Too much caffeine? Dehydration?

I'm not sure why it's taken me quite this long to discover Shadow Unit — I've known about it since Bear first mentioned it a year or two ago — but now I've finally found time to dig into it properly. And I'm very impressed.

The basic premise is of a series of stories for a TV show where a group of FBI behaviour experts investigate people who have been granted extraordinary abilities and, not coincidentally, been warped into murderous monsters by something called the Anomaly. It's described as being part Man from U.N.C.L.E., part X-Files, part Criminal Minds. But in written form. And better.

It's the perfect TV show for a book nerd who doesn't really like TV all that much...
