First day of the new year
Jan. 1st, 2015 08:50 pmSaid goodbye to pater and my oldest nephew this morning: they're off to London for a few days and won't get back until after I've gone. Despite the warmer temperatures, the weather's still pretty miserable with wind and rain. I managed to fit in a run before the worst of it, but I didn't envy my mum's community association walk through the woods this morning.

The Christmas tree in the dusk — it feels like we're starting to come to the end of things...
Instead of going on a hearty walk around Earlsdon, I passed the first day of 2015 reading, wrestling with Ariadne's cryptic, and, in the afternoon, catching up with my mum in the peace provided by the absence of visitors and grandchildren.

Lazing and bouldering
Dec. 23rd, 2014 08:19 pmAmother gentle morning pottering around at home and talking to H, who was round to sort us out ahead of Christmas. It now looks like our plans have settled: now that my uncle is out of hospital, he'll probably come down the day before but without my granny — the general feeling is that it's better for her to stay in London than it is to subject her to the uncertainties of something that may or may not happen depending on other people's States of health etc.
After a quick trip to Go Outdoors with pater, who was after a new pair of shoes, I managed to get my act together and go bouldering for a couple of hours at the university. They'd put up some fun new route — including something that included a perfectly sized knee-bar — and the place was lively without being too busy.

A quiet day at home
Dec. 6th, 2014 04:59 pmA lazy day of staying in, thanks in part to the removal of the steps from in front of the house. So instead of disturbing the builders, busy setting up the shuttering required to cast the new stairs, I've read, snoozed, listened to the radio, and made myself something nice for afternoon tea:

The scones were made using a slightly modified version of one of the Guardian's list of 10 best yoghurt recipes from sometime last year. They came out extremely well: the yoghurt added a pleasantly tart quality and the layering worked every bit as well as promised.

An mixed extra day off...
Jun. 6th, 2012 09:19 pmBetter day than yesterday, with the rest of the gang picking up the support problems that I've been wrangling with over the long (very long) weekend. My morning run went well, with no sign of the muscle tightness that has been bothering me since resuming the discipline after my blisters healed, and the pool wasn't too busy what with people starting to return to work. But on the downside, I seem to have picked up an ear infection that means that I can't hear anything off to my left. There isn't any pain, just the feeling that my ear is full of water. If things aren't any better tomorrow, I'll see if I can make an appointment with the doctor.
ETA: My ear seems to be showing signs of recovery, so I suspect it may have been caused by my earplug leaking while I was at the pool. Or, just possibly, it might be a delayed defensive reaction to sitting on M's right on Friday...

A classic lazy Sunday
Jan. 15th, 2012 07:51 pmAfter a gentle start I indulged in a bout of rampant capitalism, finally buying myself the new wallet I've needed for at least the last 5 years — I think I got my previous wallet when my bank upgraded my account to a tweenie account 25 years ago. While I was in town I also took the opportunity to pick up the latest works of Drs MacAuley and Reynolds, before heading to my not-quite local where I didn't have lunch. Finished the day by catching up on my current reading, going running — and picking up an impressive blister for my trouble.
Running and gossiping
Sep. 10th, 2011 07:06 pmMy run first thing was definitely easier than yesterday's, which was definitely hampered by the after effects of Thursday's exuberant bike ride. During the day I managed to polish off the last of The Magician King which I loved — I especially adored the sections in the farmhouse in Provence — and in the evening I sloped off to meet the Usual Suspects at the Wellhouse to catch up on the gossip. And what do you know, I'm back home in time to catch the start of Doctor Who.
Excelsior!

I wonder as I wander
Aug. 30th, 2011 06:20 pmSpent my rest day pottering around Exeter with H. We went for a long wander — it seemed far longer walking than running — through Riverside Valley more or less to Countess Weir and then back along the leat and through Belle Isle Park to the quay for lunch at The Waterfront. It's a really nice route, especially through the woods where, with a bit of imagination, it feels as though it might be in the middle of nowhere even though it's really only a minute from the Topsham Road.
Frenzied activity and idle moochery
Aug. 24th, 2011 07:34 pmA morning of frantically trying to fit work around a long and rather dispiriting meeting during which I was moved to quote from NASA's delightfully wonderful report on the (non-)acceptance of their ETA10 in the late 1980s:
Attachment 12 shows that during the first nine days of this test many Fortran codes failed to compile; of those that compiled, many ran very slowly, and of those that completed, many gave incorrect results.
Barton, J.T., (1991), A History of the ETA-10Q Acceptance Tests at NAS, NASA, 3
With the morning over, I met up with H&P&J for lunch at St George's and a pleasant afternoon's mooch around town in search of belts and climbing shoes and other obvious essentials.
Semi-lazy Sunday
Jul. 31st, 2011 08:32 pmStarted the day well with a 10 mile run to work off last night's food, but my late night soon began to tell and I didn't really manage to do very much else. The best I could manage was to rustle up soup for lunch, listen to Gormenghast on the radio, and finished off the crime novel I started yesterday.
Reading and not much else
Jun. 19th, 2011 09:36 pmAfter a seriously late start — I woke up three hours later than usual — I decided to have a lazy day and spent most of my time cramming down Elizabeth Bear's delightful Shakespearian fantasy Hell and Earth, listening to the radio and generally goofing off. I managed to fit in a shortish bike ride in late afternoon, but other than that, a bit of a write-off.
A reading and radio day
Jan. 25th, 2009 08:48 pmA day of gentle reading, listening to the radio and general stress avoidance. In a moment of confusion, I re-read The Honor of the Queen which I last read in 2007, when I should really have read The Short Victorious War, which I haven't read for quite a while.
Then, with my cache of suitable reading matter exhausted — I was going to read The Passion of New Eve, but I decided I wasn't up to it — I picked up a copy of Paul McAuley's The Quiet War, largely on Al Reynolds' recommendation and, so far at least, I haven't been disappointed.

An afternoon by the Exe
Jan. 24th, 2009 06:01 pmWandering towards the comic book store by way of the quay, I bumped in to M&N, who were also out for a Saturday wander. After hanging around on the tow path for a while, we eventually adjourned to the Port Royal beer garden where we passed the afternoon watching the river and setting the world to rights.
Sunday, lazy Sunday
Jul. 16th, 2006 04:35 pmAnother beautiful Sunday, spent in pursuance of hedonistic decadence. Oh, all right, you've got me: yet another day lost to the library, to reading, to philosophy and to listening to the radio. But I did make one concession to the gods of shameless pleasure: I stopped off at the continental market in Sidwell Street and blew a fair amount on tasty foreign delicacies. Yum.
Siesta Day
Jul. 3rd, 2006 04:36 pmAccording to a post on one of our internal newsgroups, last week saw National Siesta Day. I feel inspired. I think I'll replace my traditional postprandial double espresso with 15 minutes face down in a fiche reader — the Menagerie's favoured method for sleeping on the job — catching some downtime...
The acquisition of book smarts
Jun. 4th, 2006 08:38 pmAfter spending the last few hours frantically trying to jam learning into my head, I now feel sandy-eyed and ill. My condition is not helped by the knowledge that I'm going to have to get up tomorrow morning and go through the same process all over again.
How on earth did I manage to get so behind? Oh, wait, I remember now: I spent a couple of weeks lazing and slacking off...

Playing truant
May. 11th, 2006 02:45 pmA combination of superb weather and a visit from the Defence Select Committee contrived to create the perfect day for lunch in town. Now all I have to do is get myself back into the right frame of mind for work. I think it might take me a while...
The joys of staying put
Apr. 13th, 2006 06:14 pmI'm feeling positively smug about my decision not to haul ass back to Coventry for Easter, given the grim reports of transport delays. Yes indeed, instead of enduring yet another purgatorial train journey, I've spent my day pigging out on chocolate and coffee, churning through a whole load of old crosswords and baking some rye bread. Definitely better than putting up with a carriage full of a mixture of marines and screaming children...
Sunday movies
Mar. 26th, 2006 05:59 pmBest film to watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon spent at home with your folks? North by Northwest, of course.
Wintry Sunday Mornings
Feb. 26th, 2006 12:18 pmMy current favourite method of passing a cold Sunday morning? Drinking tea in bed, listening to the Forty Eight and reading a good book. Talk about a shamelessly indulgent lifestyle...
